GAS CITY DRAGON BOATING FOR HEALTH ASSOCIATION
We promote health through fitness. Dragon boating has become the second most popular team sport in the world, second only to soccer. As we compete in other cities across Alberta, your support will be recognized by as many as 60,000 spectators and 16,000 paddles, as in the 2005 Calgary Dragon Boat event. We are currently working with a web designer to get our web page up and running. On our web page there is a “Thank You to Our Sponsor” button, which list their name or shows their logo. The logo or name can be linked to our sponsors web page or e-mail. Our team T-Shirts will have our sponsors names displayed on them. We can also hang sponsor banners at the races in our team area.
Our Objectives -We would like to see several teams consisting of mixed teams (both men & women), a men’s team, a women’s team, a senior’s team, and a breast cancer survivor team. These teams would operate all within our non-profit association sharing the use of a dragon boat, and equipment
The Breast Cancer Connection Dragon Boating came to Canada in 1995, when Dr. McKenzie a physician at the University of British Columbia after doing research determined the importance of upper body exercise in women who have had breast cancer. Dr McKenzie thought that Dragon Boat racing would be a fun and healthy way for women to get upper body exercise and improve their over all health. At every festival there is a breast cancer survivor challenge cup. This race is only for the survivors. After the race there is a ceremony called the Festival of Roses. This ceremony is held to bring awareness to breast cancer, and is also dedicated to the breast cancer survivors and to those we have lost along the way. The ceremony is also held to encourage women to have regular check-ups as well as self-examination, and the need for women who have had breast cancer to continue to exercise and stay healthy. Seeing all the women finish the challenge cup, and walk up to the ceremony proves to everyone that there is a life after breast cancer
What our Organization is About - Health through fitness.
Fitness means different things to different people. For some, fitness and exercise are a means of preventing unwanted disease in the later years. For others, exercise is fun and relaxing. Fitness can also help to improve mental health and boost your day-to-day energy level, thus making a significant difference in the work place and someone’s personal life.
Racing a Dragon Boat is fundamentally a teamwork exercise where each team member is reliant on his or her colleagues to keep time and listen to instructions. This also will have an overall benefit in ones life.
